Their guys know what they're doing and we'll just go ahead and bring in one of their guys right now and we talked to him last year too, I think, aaron, you're our first revisit podcast guest.
Speaker 1:So, Aaron Thomas welcome.
Speaker 2:Appreciate it. Yeah, this is like an annual tradition. It seems like right before season we kind of get together and so we'll be back.
Speaker 1:Why not? And you were very instrumental in getting 70 70 athletics to sponsor the podcast this this season and I want to thank you so much for that and I'm sure there's some uh podcast fans that are going to thank you for that. So tell us what 70 70. So to kind of get everyone. We just kind of jumped into it. I need to to make sure I introduce Aaron correctly he is the head coach at Liberty High School in the Springs there and he's also the 17U coach for 7070 Athletics. So go ahead and tell us what 7070 Athletics does and we'll talk about your answers in a second.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so obviously I've had the fortune of kind of jumping off their club teams about a year, two years ago, brought a group over and jumped on the club side of things. Really, what it started out as is a training academy and it's still something that we do. So we have training sessions pretty much after school until about 9 pm, shooting machine sessions. We run through on three leagues elementary school leagues, middle school leagues so a lot of great things happening. We've got some great trainers who are certified. We just got another one certified out in Minnesota at Michael Lancaster's IPT headquarters.
Speaker 2:Kyle Owens is kind of our head trainer. We've picked up a couple other great trainers around town. So keeping really busy with that, just helping kids develop and get better, that's kind of our core. We don't follow a very traditional club model on that side of things. So my guys, we practice once or twice a week in the summer, but really every other day they were up getting skill sessions, getting on shooting machines, doing those type of things, versus practicing once a week and then rolling out to some tournament and you know who knows where and playing a bunch of games. You know we put emphasis on the skill development piece.
Speaker 1:And now a word from our sponsors. Speaker 1:And now back to the colorado high school basketball podcast. So let's talk a little bit about the success you guys, the 7070 club, had over this over the summer. You guys are, yeah, yeah, the 20. Mike the Boyer kid, logan Boyer, you got London to come. London came over after spending the spring with the CS minors. You guys open up some eyes, and I remember talking to a couple of coaches in Kansas City. You know Bryce Real playing for you. He's turning heads and you know me and you were both kind of scratching our heads a little bit. It's like guys, he's putting buckets on people and no one's really, just because he's 5'10"-ish that really.
Speaker 2:Still scratching my head.
Speaker 1:yeah, and especially for like NAIA D2s, like that shouldn't really matter, but I think it could be a little bit of the new landscape of college recruiting with the transfer portal. What do you think?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean, I think, obviously, obviously, I think we had a really successful group. Um, you know, seven of my nine have offers to play at some level next year. Obviously, london came over to us in july. It was kind of a you know family situation. So, um, him being my high school guy to make sure he was taken care of, um, you know, we got like marshall as well. So you know we've got we've got a ton of skilled guys, guys who can really stretch the floor.
Speaker 2:You saw us in Kansas City. My formula was pretty simple we're going to run the ball up the floor and we're going to shoot threes. They're either going to go in or they're not. If they don't, bryce, blake, logan, somebody's going to hit one eventually and then they'll get hot. Ran a lot of you know five out actions and things like that. So we did open a lot of eyes.
Speaker 2:I do think that you know, the change in the landscape in terms of Transylvania Portal is really really impacting a lot of kids. I can tell you firsthand like we ran an independent circuit. I think that's also kind of deemed us a little bit. You know, coaches, just with the, with the viewing period and things like that, they're just getting more bang for their buck. You know, to go to one event in Memphis or in Atlanta or something like that, versus the old days where you know it was weeks long and they could jump around to different events and they could fly in and out, and you know they just don't do that anymore.
Speaker 2:So it hurt us a little bit. But I can tell you, when we played in Kansas City, every single time like every coach's seat was full. So you know, when you talk about head scratching on some of my guys like yeah, I'm still a little perplexed on you know how guys like Blake Marshall and Bryce Reel don't have, you know, more offers and things like that, um, especially with the way they played this summer, um put out great tape and um, they have they're successful high school players as well. So, and that's kind of how we we build it out. And you know that was kind of the talks that I had with coaches when we traveled right and blake.
Speaker 1:Uh, blake's one of my favorite guys to watch because he might miss six in a row. Then he'll make eight in a row and you're like what in the world is going on here? Kick and shoot, it's got a great stroke. Um, and yeah, I was like you know, I see some of the places he's going for a visit for and I'm like, hey, armac guys, you may not want to let him get out, because if he gets out and he gets hot at his little or at an NAI level that he's probably going to jump over the D2 level or, I don't know, maybe jump over the ArmAC level. I don't know if he'd necessarily jump over the D2 level, but the and hell who knows with how close those lower D1s and D2s are anymore, it's kind of a wash. So yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:No, I agree.
Speaker 1:And now a word from our sponsors. Are you ready to elevate your game? 70, 70 athletics, a club basketball program located in Monument, colorado, specializes in basketball training that builds skills, confidence and court IQ. Whether you're a beginner or an aspiring pro, our expert coaches are here to help you dominate. We start with strong fundamentals. Learn new skills, apply in weekly games. Speaker 1:And now back to the Colorado High School Basketball Podcast. Explain London Prater's rise over the summer because it was like, and even up until like our show, my showcase. I was like, well, shoot, I might get london here after all. And all of a sudden it's like no, he's got an offer to go to toledo and he's going to sam houston and he's going to go do this. They're like, well, hell, how'd all that happen?
Speaker 2:so.
Speaker 2:So he had great D2 offers. They all basically came out of Scholastic Showcase in June. He had a great weekend. First day was a little rocky but then from there he had a great weekend Picked up Mesa, picked up UCCS, already had Metro State and I think we got into July was with me. I mean I spent all of July with him and you know we had a long talk one night. He just said well, I. He said coach, I just I feel like I'm a division one player but I feel like it's never gonna happen for me. Um, and it is what is every kid's dream is to be a d1 player. And so I just saw kids' dreams kind of getting squelched. And so Brandon Goebel is an alumni of Liberty High School.
Speaker 2:When I got the job he was one of the first people to reach out and say hey, if you need anything. And obviously I know his network. And so reach out to him about London, ask him if he could take a look. He took a look and said it was a no-brainer. He put a tweet out seven footer shoots the shoots it it. So he put a tweet out and then he was on a report that went on on a Thursday before a holiday and the following Tuesday, once coaches had gotten back and check their email, I kid you not, I was on the phone from seven 30 in the morning to probably eight at night. I mean it was like coach, coach, coach, coach, coach, and so from all over the place. And we were at the time. We were also, you know, he had also had an offer from West Florida which he really, really liked the idea of. And we were, we were scheduling, we were going to go, and then when they kind of saw it all jump off you know Nick Lenhardt's a Springs guy so he reached out and said hey, coach, let's just delay and see what happens. And so we did an unofficial DU Went great, they offered, he loved it. He had already gone to do an unofficial at DU Went great, they offered, he loved it. He had already gone to do an unofficial at Mesa, loved it.
Speaker 2:Toledo calls me on a Monday, says we're flying in Wednesday night and I'm flying out Thursday morning. Can you get me in there before school. And it was one of their, an assistant, that had been with them for a long time but had played for Kowalczyk. So we really trusted him. We worked um, but it had played for kowalczyk so he really trusted him. We worked out before school, him, and uh, cam did a workout from seven to eight by 10 15. My phone ring um todd kowalczyk called but told me he was going to call london with an offer. Um offered they got us on the very next available trip. Um sold us on a non-football weekend and you know he just it just took off from there. Um took and then we took an official to montana state. Um, and then he came to me the monday morning after we got back from montana state and you know had made up his mind awesome that's.
Speaker 1:That's quite the whirlwind. I was like I was like, so you think we'll get him and you're like, nah, he's going on in the official to Toledo. I was like, ah, that makes sense that makes sense Would have made a great showcase, though, just saying.
Speaker 2:Yeah, no, we were going to get him there.
Speaker 1:So that kind of leads into. You know, you mentioned Cam there, cam Cunningham, one of the best sophomores in the state, how's that? And then you got Evan Trinidad also.
Speaker 2:Really good, I think I called him the kid with the specs and the hops. When I texted you the other day, that one time, Like who's this kid?
Speaker 1:And that kind of leads to the other part of Liberty having maybe a little more buzz around them than they've had in the past. Some people thinking you might be top 10. I don't know if I have you in the top 10 yet. I haven't done my top 10.
Speaker 2:I mean, you're probably yeah, yeah, no, it's just, it's exciting to even be in conversation. Honestly. You know I took a. I took a job that a lot of people told me I was a psychopath to take. You know I took a job that a lot of people told me I was a psychopath to take and you know I've been. You know we kind of talked about it last year and you know it was before trial so I couldn't really talk about the freshman that much. But obviously now, like there's no hiding them, I think we have a phenomenal sophomore class and Cam's a big part of that. You know you got Evan.
Speaker 2:I'm returning another one named Gavin. You know Gavin was our sixth man last year Probably. You know he'll take an uptick in role and so you know we only graduated two and you know I love those two seniors. But it equated to about four and a half five points a game, so it's not a whole lot of scoring that we're losing. You know Cam's done all the right things this summer. He's gotten better. He's been in the weight room, he knows what he needs to work on um. You know I've gotten a whole lot closer um over the past year or so and so it's been great to see his growth. Um, you know, when london stuff started taking off, people were like, ah, you'll. You know, you'll never take a phone call about a 26 right now, or definitely not a 27, and I'm like yeah, you're probably right. Well, you know, I've taken some phone calls like about a 27.
Speaker 2:Um, you know, people have seen see you came down and tad boyle came down and saw alone and, and so you know 6'5", 6'6" point guard who doesn't turn 16 until January. You know it's something you need to get your eyes on.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and he's a, and I'll be honest and I'd tell everyone this, and you know you might be a little mad about it and he might be a little mad about it. But you watch him warm up and you're like, okay, cause you guys have to understand Cam's very slight he is not. I mean, there are broomsticks that have more weight to them than than he does. And you're just kind of like, well, and then his, his, his jump shots, just it's quirky, we'll call it quirky. And you're like I don't know if he can get that off, like in a game. So you're like thin kid, quirky shot. And you're like I don't know. But then that ball goes up, throw out the warm-up part. I go. Coaches, don't watch warm-ups, don't watch me warm-ups.
Speaker 1:You're going to be like, no, I'm leaving, no, no, it's gonna drop. You're gonna be like, no, I'm leaving, no, no, no, no, no, stay here, get through warm-ups and then, uh, let the game start because it's a total different. Um, he's kind of a total different player once that ball goes up and you're like, okay, you can see it, you can see how quick he is with the ball and he's pretty, pretty smooth with it and he his finishing package around the rims pretty high for a sophomore, the quirky jump shot. He gets it off quick.
Speaker 2:Um, probably we'll have to work on a little bit, but um, yeah, I mean, and and he knows that a lot of that's come, a lot of that has come from strength. He's always shot it that way. Um, you know, when I first first saw him shoot, I was like there's same thoughts, there's no way that's going to be able to get off. But and there's no hiding it, kim Kim's, kim's not a great warmup guy and in his mind and now me, knowing cam like he is actually going through like a warmup but those are his mannerisms.
Speaker 1:The thing is, is like it not like there's like kids that and it might segue into my rant a little bit, but when you're I call it, some people call it the airport test, right, You're watching him warm up, Okay. Does he dribble? Can he dribble? Yes. Can he run and chew gum? Yes. And then you're like you're just kind of looking at the little bits of like okay, how's, how's this jump shot? Look while he's practicing. And that's when you're like going, okay, then the other stuff's all right.
Speaker 2:And then you're like ah, there's that quirky jump shot. I don't know man?
Speaker 1:yeah, and it's not. I think it's more like that because I, you know, way back in the day and this is 20 years ago now, I can't believe it's been that long. Um, we had a when I was was coaching in Florida as an assistant, we had a kid named Dante and he was built exactly like Cam and he was and like Cam, he was our best player. Like ball went up, kid, gave people buckets, like serious buckets, went on to go to be a D1 player, play at USF and Georgia State. But cam kind of reminds me of that, kind of reminds me of that where you're just kind of like slight kid, don't really know, and then all of a sudden you see the athleticism, you see the that he can get his shot off and that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1:And then evan evan's kind of quirky too in a way, because kind of like I said, the kid with the specs and the hop. You're like, wait a minute, the, the kid with the rec specs, just dunk on that kid.
Speaker 2:And you're like, yeah, yeah, no, he's special for us. You know, I've often told people you know Evan, I know what I'm going to get from Cam. Like, Cam's going to come out, cam's going to do what Cam does, and I know what I'm going to get out of London. You know, and I'm starting to know what I'm going to get out of london. Um, you know, and I'm starting to know what I'm gonna get out of evan. But you know, evan's really our x factor.
Speaker 2:Um, he's a very, very special athletic piece. Um, right now he's dunking, you know, the heads way above the rim. Right now, um, he's shooting at a really high level, um, and he's someone who's gonna, you know, step up and have a really big role for us again this year. But no, I think with Evan, a lot of it's just going to come down to, you know, seeing the ball going early and being confident with it, because when he's confident and he's feeling bouncy, you know, the sky's really the limit. I've had some coaches come in and like had no idea, they didn't even know he was on the team. Honestly, just because you know.
Speaker 1:You hear about everybody else.
Speaker 2:They were there for you know others, and then they see him and you know some of our other guys and it's been fun.
Speaker 1:And, like you mentioned, you did have quite the carousel of coaches coming through there for a while when school started. Yeah, and now a word from our sponsors. Are you ready to elevate your game? 7070 Athletics, a club basketball program located in Monument, colorado, specializes in basketball training that builds skills, confidence and court IQ. Speaker 1:And now back to the Colorado High School basketball podcast. It's kind of leading into that, you know, being a top 10-ish team, who do you think are some teams we need to watch out for? Because you know you pretty much played everyone over the summer with team camps and through your club experiences, so you know a lot of the top 17 kids and 16 kids who do you think is going to be? Uh, I mean, I think we already know like mountain vista, roston valley, smoky probably. Yeah. Thunder ridge will probably up there somewhere, because thunder ridge and rock canyon are always up there somewhere.
Speaker 2:Yeah no, I mean, it's always the usual suspects. Uh, you know, I've joked, I've you know, and I've become really close since we did a spring league and that that was really a chance for us to really see some of the top denver teams. Was that spring league? Um? And then I went into the summer saying I wanted to play top teams? Um, I think I played mountain vista two or three times between the spring and the fall didn't you get him at the?
Speaker 1:yeah, we got, we got, we got him this far field, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we got him. We got him once. Brian wasn't very happy but you know he he's been great. You know he did another pod and said that you know we're kind of we're in the mix of things, so I appreciated that. But no, I think it's the usual suspects. You know there's no hiding who the top guys are the teams that you. There's no hiding who the top guys are the teams that the road goes through. You know I think down here, you know we're a force to. You know to kind of have eyes on and kind of be in that top 10 mix.
Speaker 2:And I think Doherty obviously, you know always puts out a great, great team and great product. Jj always does a phenomenal job. So you know that'll be a fun game for us. You know we'll see him twice this year and you know a team that a lot of people are kind of with the transfers things and kind of been hawking down on is like a team like Eagle Crest. You know I think Eagle Crest is going to be scary, scary. I think Anthony Nels is for real. I've coached against him several times and you know I don't think there's going to be a huge drop off there. You know Denver South got us once in the spring league or we got them and then they got us in Scholastic. Overland is always, you know, well coached and they're going to be good. So there's, you know there's a ton of talent, especially at that 6A level. You know guys are kind of spread throughout. You know, obviously there's no hiding the range of your rosters. A little insane when you look at it on paper.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they've transfers, and well, I guess not really Transfers have helped them out a little bit.
Speaker 1:Yeah yeah, but you know, a talented freshman coming in with some talented guards, that always helps. Yeah, that doesn't. That doesn't hurt at all. I want you to go on a road with me, because I went to the, because everybody you have to understand when I I really don't think I'm that important. Okay, I know what my role is. I'm I blog, ish, podcast, ish about Colorado high school basketball. I just happen to have and I hate talking about myself. It's like this. I hate, when I say I'm good at something because I was just never really brought up, to say, hey, no, you're just be humble, kind and just do your job and you know that kind of thing. Don't brag about anything. But I think I have a fairly good eye and I can tell you what either you need to improve upon or what's missing, or those kind of things. I think I'm okay.
Speaker 2:No, I agree.
Speaker 1:I go and I watch. We've had this big thing, this shift of people transferring, going to basketball academies or prep schools back east or whatever, and when that happens, you're like, okay, guys, do you understand? This is different, and what I mean by that is there's a couple of different levels. What I mean by that is there's a couple different levels, and we're going to have in a podcast or two. We're going to talk to someone that specializes in legit prep schools. Corey Hines is going to come on and talk to us. He has a lot of experience with that from being a basketball player playing at Air Force and so on, from being a basketball player playing at Air Force and so on. But I'm just like there's like so many different ways I can take this and I want to try and be as level-headed and make as much sense as possible, because I feel like I could go this rant rant and just be like this total, like anger, right, and uh, yeah in. Uh, what's that? That stupid disney movie? What's that called?
Speaker 1:um inside out yeah, inside out I can just be angry, just go full blown, blow my top and make any sense.
Speaker 1:because, first off, if you're going to and I'll and I'll, I'll do it like that If you're going to go the basketball Academy route one, make sure that it has its funding, make sure that it's a legit funding source that you can, uh, count on and they know exactly where their money's coming from and you know exactly what you're going to be paid, or have to pay, I mean and then also what you're getting for that. If you're going to have to live out of other people's houses because they don't have the, the what they say they're, going to have housing and dorms and housing and stuff.
Speaker 1:That's a huge red flag. Huge, it's like don't go there. That's what the flag says Don't go there. And the funding pieces because, like we've seen this, If you don't have the funding, those places can't operate, Because it costs thousands of dollars for these teams to travel.
Speaker 2:Even if they're in a bus.
Speaker 1:Right, Aaron you remember cars when you take kids.
Speaker 2:It's constant travel, it's not like right up the street. There's not one town that houses 15 prep schools.
Speaker 1:This is a lot, especially out west Right.
Speaker 1:I talked to my buddy in Florida one town that houses 15 prep schools like this is a lot, especially out west right I mean, yeah, yeah, you know, I talked to my buddy in florida still and he's like we get a prep school popping up every other week and closing every other week because they can't. They can't fund themselves and they don't have legitimate funding sources. So if you go and you ask parents, please ask what is the funding source? Where are you getting your funding? And if they can't answer that, there's another flag that says don't go there. Yep, agreed. Well, aaron, thank you for uh going down this rabbit hole with me tonight.
Speaker 1:I appreciate it always yeah hopefully it, my rambling, made some sense. It made sense to me. You know make and you know you guys going to the prep school route or basketball Academy route make sure that you know people have their funding and you don't get there and then four weeks later I have to go home because they don't have funding, yeah, so thanks for joining me on this, yeah.
Speaker 2:Always, always good to be on.
Speaker 1:And I appreciate you joining and I appreciate your efforts and help and finding us a sponsor for to carry on my ramblings.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Hopefully Jason's not too mad about my rambling tonight.
Speaker 2:I'm sure Jason will be fine.
Speaker 1:And then, like you know, it'll be exciting to hear where your seven of your nine have got offers.
Speaker 2:Yep, seven of the nine right now, that'll be fun to see where they end up. Yeah, we plan to have a big signing date party in the spring. Obviously, we know where one's going, but the rest of theirs are you know? They're looking through options.
Speaker 1:Aaron, thank you for joining us tonight here on the Colorado High School Basketball Podcast presented by 7070 Athletics. Elevate your game at 7070 Athletics. So good luck this season.
Speaker 2:Yep, appreciate it.
Speaker 1:All right, everyone. That's Aaron Thomas, head coach at for joining us on my rant and talking to us much earlier in the show about his 70, 70 team and his high school team at Liberty high school there in Colorado Springs. It's going to be one of the better teams this year in six a should be a lot of fun to keep up with them. They've got London Prater D1 commit to Toledo. Cam Wake, cunningham top player in 27 class. Evan Trinidad, another top player, has hops can shoot it. They will be a talented team to deal with throughout the high school season and I'm sure we'll get to talk to. You know we might bring Aaron back right before state see how he's feeling, see if he still looks this fresh and relaxed this time.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:That'll be entertaining All right. Thanks for joining us everyone. Talk to you next time here at the Colorado High School Basketball Podcast presented by 7070 Athletics.
